If you have done any scrolling on Instagram lately, it's likely that you have seen at least one video of someone making sourdough bread. There's nothing in the world like the smell of fresh bread coming out of your oven. Pair that with the gratification of making something from such simple ingredients, and I'm all in. I also know however, that there are thousands of recipes, some steps that seem so complicated, and so many definitions that seem like a foreign language. I'm convinced that there's no right or wrong way to do it--you just do what works for you and your family. For us, we use a simple recipe from Homegrown Education where they break everything down for beginners, make two loaves at a time, and are learning as we go.
After not buying bread for our family in over 6 months, we're never turning back. We've seen tremendous benefits of sourdough and can't wait to hear how your family does the same! Since being on this journey, there are several things I've learned.
Below are some of my top tips for baking sourdough bread.
Don't overthink it. All of the new terms and definitions can seem so daunting. It's not as hard as it seems, and you can do it! You're taking steps to providing a pantry staple with clean, natural ingredients, and no preservatives or chemicals. That's a big deal!
Don't be afraid to put your starter in the refrigerator. As a mom, I'm not looking to take care of another child (ahem...looking at you sourdough starter). If you aren't baking for a few days, just put it in the refrigerator! When you're ready to get started again, pull your starter out on the counter, bring it to room temperature, then feed it. You'll be amazed how strong and durable these things are.
Let your sourdough work while you sleep! I've learned that the best schedule for me is letting my dough bulk ferment (sit out on my counter while it does all of the work) while we sleep! When I wake up, I separate the dough and am baking within a few hours. It works while I sleep!
The hardest part about jumping into this journey isn't the baking, it's saying yes and going for it! You've said yes to learning something new and creating something from simple ingredients for your family. It's a big deal so enjoy your journey and celebrate with some bread!
