Stovetop Potpourri--the perfect gift for neighbors!

Writer's picture: freerangefarmhousefreerangefarmhouse

It's no secret that the holidays are for gift giving. We're all in search of the perfect gift with the most meaning behind it so that we can let those around us feel how much we love them. This year, I wanted to make sure that we were loving our neighbors and loving them well. After living on our property for six years now, this year was finally the year where I felt like I had the capacity to do it.

We decided that we wanted to make stovetop potpourri for our neighbors and I am so glad that we did! It was so simple, affordable, and absolutely beautiful! We started with a mason jar then just added all of the ingredients inside. I will shout it from the rooftops--if you aren't apart of a local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook, you need to be! It is such a unique group that's based on where you live. In our group recently, someone posted that they needed to get rid of three boxes of mason jars. I commented on the post and said that I'd love to be considered for the gift to use them for Christmas gifts and I was chosen to receive the gift! Seriously, if you have a group near you, join it! It's all about giving out of our abundance and helping others.

Ingredients for stovetop potpourri

If you're interested in a simple way to love your neighbors this holiday season, stovetop potpourri is the way to go!

Ingredients:

  • Large Mason Jars

  • Cinnamon Sticks or ground cinnamon

  • Cloves

  • Mandarin Oranges (we used Cuties)

  • Cranberries

  • Pieces of Greenery (We have a real Christmas tree so I cut off a few pieces for each jar; if this isn't an option, Rosemary would be beautiful and smell really good as well!)

Instructions:

  1. Place 1 cup of cranberries in each large mason jar.

  2. Add 1 heaping teaspoon of ground cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick with 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

  3. Add about 1 teaspoon of cloves, place one orange inside, and place greenery inside.

  4. Once finished, add a gift tag with stovetop instructions! When ready to use, slice the orange and place all ingredients in a pot. Cover with water and let simmer. Feel free to add more water as needed.

I created a gift tag that I've attached to my e-mail sign ups! If you subscribe to Freerange e-mails, you'll automatically receive the gift tag with stovetop instructions. Feel free to print it out and use as many times as you'd like as you

love on your neighbors this holiday season!
