The leaves are changing, there's a crisp breeze in the air first thing in the morning, and it's almost warm enough to wear jeans the entire day without regretting it by noon. Where we live in Georgia, this also means that it's fig season! Figs always make me think of my Paw Paw. He is such a sucker for fig jam and now that I'm grown, I am too.

When we first threw around the idea of moving and building our forever home on the same property as my in-laws, there were so many things that I never thought about. One of those things is reaping the benefits of the lifelong legacy my father in law and mother in law are continuing to build on their land. We live on 15 acres of the most beautiful property with ponds, farm animals, and a fruitful orchard with blueberry bushes, peaches, apples, pears, and even kiwis. We still haven't figured out how to properly harvest the kiwi, but we'll get there eventually. In our orchard we have three giant fig trees, so when they start to ripen, everyone gets excited.

For our family, we try to make as many things on our own, with as little ingredients as possible. This fig jam recipe has only 6 ingredients and none of them are pectin. If you are new to making jam, don't worry; this one's easy.

Hand picked figs with lemon juice and zest

Tools you may need:

Fig Jam Ingredients you will need:

  • Approximately 5 cups of figs

  • Zest and juice of one lemon

  • 3 Tablespoons of water

  • 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla

How to make easy fig jam:

Step 1: Cut your figs into quarters. I like to cut them in half, then cut those halves in half again.

Step 2: Take out your large stainless steel pan and turn onto low heat, and add all ingredients.

  1. Add your figs, water, lemon juice and zest, brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla.

  2. Stir while breaking down the figs and mixing in the other ingredients.

  3. Let simmer for 30 minutes

Step 3: Scoop all ingredients into the blender of your choice and blend. I use a smaller blender so I divide this up into a few different batches.

Step 4: Once your jam is blended, divide it into your mason jars. This recipe typically makes 3 jars of jam.

Step 5: Seal your jam. There are a lot of different ways to do this, but this is what I think is the easiest way.

  1. Once your lid is tightened on your jam, simply turn your jar upside down and let it sit until cool.

  2. Once the jam is cool, turn your jar right side up and press the center of the jar. The center should go down because of the pressure that naturally formed during the cooling process.

  3. Store in refrigerator or on counter for one month.
