A Birthday Party for the Book Lover

It's no secret that fall is my favorite time of year. I truly believe you can't beat the leaves changing, the bonfires happening, and don't get me started on the clothes. There's nothing better than cozying up with a sweater.

My birthday is in October, so maybe that's why I love fall so much. Fast forward 25 years, and my daughter was born the day before my birthday. Talk about a birthday present! When she was born, our lives immediately changed for the better and it gets sweeter each year.

My family lives out of town so each year for the kids birthdays, everyone comes to town and we always have a big birthday party. This year, my bookworm daughter wanted a book themed party. The problem with this was that I couldn't really find a ton of inspiration that was kid friendly. Everywhere I looked, the only book theme I could find was catered more towards a ladies night's book club.

We got creative and did this whole party on a really inexpensive budget and it was my daughter's favorite birthday party yet!

So let's talk decorations: these were pretty minimalistic. I bought a copy of Anne of Green Gables from a consignment store we just so happened to be in earlier in the week and made two pennants from them. One pennant we cut out and wrote Chapter 7 on since it was my daughter's seventh birthday. The other was a traditional pennant hanging from our mantle.

We kept food very simple, and I cannot recommend a 2:00 party enough. We had a variety of heavier snacks including fruit, chips & hummus, crackers with cheese & pepperoni, chicken nuggets, sourdough brownies, and sourdough pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. Add a birthday cake to the mix and there was plenty of food.

I love to have an activity at parties. Whether it's a game, a craft, a bounce house--just gives the kids something to do! To stay with the theme of this party, we had our table covered in supplies to make bookmarks! This was so simple and such a huge hit! I purchased a pack of pre-cut bookmarks from Michael's for $3.99 and it came with 50 bookmarks. You could do this yourself, but I decided to go for the sake of ease on this one. Since we're a homeschool family, we have an endless supply of markers, glitter glue, and foam stickers. If you're looking for something that will have it all, this Craft Supply Box is such a great resource! We used it for bookmark making and still have plenty of supplies left!

When it came time for gifts, our girl knew she'd be getting gifts from us and her grandparents, so we suggested a book exchange instead of having friends bring gifts. She thought this was a great idea and this was a huge hit! Everyone came with a book and left with a different one. We also didn't have to worry about where we would be putting a bunch of new toys or de-clutter before her party in order to make room for more "stuff". Cannot recommend a book exchange enough!

I know that what I'm about to share is a little unfair: my mom is a baker. She makes the most beautiful cakes, and we are fortunate enough to have the most beautiful cakes for free. This cake is a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, and filled with a white chocolate mousse filling. I wish that everyone could taste her cakes because they are delicious. She added my daughter's favorite books, and even made a replica of my daughter on top. Her "mini" is holding her most recent book she's read, Little House in the Big Woods. The attention to detail is unreal!

If you or your child is a bookworm like mine, this theme was so much fun, easy to do on a budget, and age appropriate. If you feel inspired after reading this and have a book themed party, comment below or tag us on instagram! (@freerangefarmhouse)
